It's been a sad week here at Maple Cottage, as we lost our youngest chicken, Daisy. She was 8 weeks old and in that strange looking phase between losing her little chick fluff and getting her big girl feathers. I will certainly miss seeing her running around the coop trying to keep up with her big sisters.
On a happier note, the rest of the gang are doing well and the last of the little ones are now out and about free-ranging. They are loving their new freedom and tend to be the last ones to bed at night... bribing them back into the coop with treats works like a charm though.
One of the newbies laid her first egg last week. No idea which one, but it was exciting to see it in the nest box alongside the other eggs.
All the rain we've had recently coupled with hot sunny days has really done wonders for the garden and everything is growing and blooming... especially the weeds. Oh and the grass! I swear it's like I mow it and then if I look back I can see it shooting up behind the mower!! Okay, maybe a tiny exaggeration but that's what it feels like. To combat grass-rage I've hired some help. So far, not been that productive but you never know.
The fig tree and persimmon tree are both starting to get fruit and I'm excited to pick them when they ripen. It's my first time growing both of these and I'm looking forward to trying new recipes.
